OriginFrom Old Danish almughe, from Old Norse almúgi, almúgr, consists of the two words, al (“all”) + mue (“mass, amount”) (obsolete). Literally entire mass of people. Word only found in North Germanic languages; cognate with Swedish allmoge, Norwegian Nynorsk ålmuge, Icelandic almúgi, Faroese almúgi.
