OriginA modern word of unknown origin. The first attestation is in the second volume of HHB (1769) as a Grabar gloss to Ashkharhabar խահվէ (xahvē), followed by attestations in Xačʻatur J̌uġayecʻi (1787), Sarafean (1788) and Petros J̌ułayecʿi (1789).
Perhaps of onomatopoeic origin, from the sound made when sipping coffee. Typologically compare Hungarian szürcsöl (“to slurp, sip”), of onomatopoeic origin.
Folk etymology explains as սև (sew, “black”) + ջուր (ǰur, “water”).
