From Proto-Polynesian *matuqa, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *(ma-)tuqah, from Proto-Austronesian *(ma-)tuqaS. May have been originally restricted to the father (while the mother has whaea) but eventually broadened to cover both genders by Āpirana Ngata's time.
