OriginFirst attested as liethorp in 943. Compound of an uncertain first element and Old Dutch thorp (“village, settlement”). The first elemented has been linked to Proto-Germanic *leuta (“duplicitous”), although this reading poses semantic difficulties. Compare Lierop.
