OrigineAn originally popular (now standard language) alternative of dos (“back”). From Romanian spată (“shoulder blade”), in particular the phrase în spate (“backwards, behind”), having developed in the sense of: through / across the shoulder blades > backwards, before developing into a concrete noun (without the în) to express the back of objects in general.
