Cognates include Finnish kierä (“twisted”), kiero (“twisted”). For the change of meaning, compare kerget (“to chase, pursue”, possibly related) and Latin ambīre (“to go round; solicit, strive”) and circāre (“to go about, traverse, wander”) → Italian cercare (“to look for”).
