EredetUncertain. Either derived from the same supposed stem as lebeg (“to float”); or from Proto-Ugric or perhaps Proto-Finno-Ugric *lᴕ̈pɜ, *lepɜ (“leaf”) (compare Erzya лопа (lopa, “leaf”)). The meaning “letter” is attested from the 14th century onwards.
