[ˈpaːjɒ]
EredetFrom Italian. Compare Gallo-Italian palio (“a small piece of cloth given to the winner of a race”), Old Italian pallio (“precious veil or fabric”). The Italian words derive from the Latin pallium, a rectangular sheet of cloth that the Romans wore as a cloak. Originally, the word applied only to the piece of cloth that was placed at the finishing post and awarded to the winner of the race at traditional Italian festivals of medieval origin.
