OriginProbably from Proto-Finno-Ugric *čäŋkᴕ- (“to help”) + -ít (verb-forming suffix). For the first element, compare the чанго- (čango-) stem of Erzya чангодемс (čangodems, “to help, to have mercy”), with verb-forming suffix -д (-d), verb stem -е, and infinitive suffix -мс (-ms).
