OriginBorrowed from an indeterminate Oghur Turkic language before the times of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin (at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries). Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *yidgelek (“berry”), cognate with Chuvash ҫырла (śyrla).
