[ˈtaːrt͡sɒ]
EredetFrom tár (“storehouse, repository”) + -ca (diminutive suffix). Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries. First attested in 1834.
The “wallet” (sense 1) and “portfolio (of a cabinet minister)” (sense 2) senses were modelled after German Portefeuille (“wallet; portfolio (of a cabinet minister)”), from French portefeuille (“wallet, folder; portfolio (of a cabinet minister)”), from porte (third-person singular indicative of porter (“to carry”)) + feuille (“sheet (of paper)”). The “feuilleton” sense (sense 3) was modelled after German Feuilleton (“feuilleton”), from French feuilleton (“feuilleton, literary article”), from feuillet (“page, leaf (of a book)”) + -on (diminutive suffix). The suffix was inferred from words such as álca, tálca and mérce.
