OriginUltimately from Proto-Balto-Slavic *nṓmāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *nṓm-eh₂, from *nem- (“to give, to take”). Cognate with Latvian nuõma (“tax, quitrent”). Baltic borrowings are also Old Novgorodian наме (name), Livonian núom, Estonian nuum (“rent, lease”). Compare related Lithuanian núomoti, Latvian nuõmât, nuõmuôt (“to rent out; to hire”), further Latvian ņemt (“to take”), Proto-Germanic *nemaną (“to take”), Ancient Greek νέμω (némō, “to dispense, distribute”). PIE root *nōm- with a long vowel, a variant of *nem-, is confirmed by Ancient Greek νωμάω (nōmáō, “to deal out, distribute”).
