OriginBorrowed from Old East Slavic думати (dumati) (cf. Russian ду́мать (dúmatʹ)), apparently together with dõma (“thought”) (q.v.); both words are first mentioned in 17th-century sources. Compare obsolete Lithuanian dūmóti, duomoti.
