AlkuperäFrom Proto-Finnic *lukëdak (“to count”) (compare Estonian lugema), from Proto-Uralic *luke- (“to count”) (compare Northern Sami lohkat (“to read, count”), Moksha лувомс (luvoms, “to count”), Udmurt лыдӟыны (lyddźyny, “to count, to read”), Eastern Khanty ԓө̆ӈәтта (łø̆ṇətta, “to read”) and possibly Hungarian olvas). Furthermore related to Northern Sami logi (“ten”) and Eastern Mari лу (lu, “ten”). The sense “to read” may represent Slavic influence; see the Proto-Finnic entry for more.
