/ˈsuːntɑ/, [ˈs̠uːn̪t̪ɑ̝]
AlkuperäOrigin uncertain, with no known cognates (other than descendants). The variant sunta is also attested, and it is not known which is original. Possibly borrowed from Baltic (compare Lithuanian siuntà from sių̃sti (“to send”), but note that the phonology of the Baltic word remains unclear; see Proto-Baltic *sjúnsti) or Slavic (compare Russian суд (sud); while phonetically possible, the semantic shift is dubious, although SSA compares it to the polysemy of German richten (“to direct; to judge”)).
- direction (indication of the point toward which an object is moving)
- way, hand (direction when indicated by right or left)
“Kumpaan suuntaan tästä käännytään?” — Which way do we turn here?
- path (direction of proceeding)
- bearing, magnetic bearing (the direction towards an object or target expressed in terms of horizontal angle between that direction and that of true north)
- heading (the direction into which a vessel's bow is pointing or the direction into which it is actually moving relative to the ground; used by some specifically for the former)
- lay (direction to which a rope is twisted)
- sense (direction of a vector)
- tack (course of action)
