OriginBack-formation from a dialectal verb typehtyä (“to be smothered, be extinguished”) (for semantics, compare German Stickstoff from (er)sticken (“to smother”)). Coined by Finnish folk poetry researcher, translator and journalist Julius Krohn in 1862.
