AlkuperäFrom Proto-Finnic *voodëk ~ *voodëh, possibly equivalent to vuota (“hide”) + -e. A native derivation from Proto-Finno-Ugric *aδ́o (“bed”) has also been proposed. Cognate with Estonian voodi.
