How to Play Word Chain

Word Chain is the last-letter word game as a daily puzzle. Answer each word with one that starts on its last letter, against a clock and a game that answers back, and beat it in fifteen words.

How Word Chain works

Each day's Word Chain opens on one start word. You answer with a word that starts on its last letter; the game answers yours the same way, and the chain grows one word at a time. Fifteen of your words beat the game.

Every turn has a clock: 20 seconds for your first five words, 16 for the next five, 12 for the last five. A word that is not in the dictionary, already in the chain, or on the wrong letter is refused and costs nothing but time. When the clock runs out, the round is over.

Words are checked against the language's own dictionary: dictionary forms only, so plurals and conjugated verbs do not count. When a last letter starts almost no words, the chain moves to the letter before it, and the prompt always shows the letter to start on.

Tips & Strategy

1
Keep short words ready

A four-letter word is as good as a long one and much faster to type when the clock is short.

2
Watch your own last letter

End your words on common letters like E, S or T: the game has to answer them, and its answer is what you answer next.

3
A refusal costs only time

If a word is refused, try another at once: nothing but the clock is lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Word Chain?
Word Chain is the classic last-letter game, also called the word chain game or shiritori. Each word must start with the last letter of the word before it. Here you play it against the game: it answers every word you give it, and you need fifteen words to win.
Which words are allowed?
Any dictionary word of four letters or more in the language you play, in its dictionary form: no names, no plurals, no conjugated verbs, and no word already in the chain.
What happens if the last letter is hard?
That is the game's trick: as the chain grows it picks words that end on letters few words start with. If almost no words start with a letter at all, the chain uses the letter before it instead, and the prompt always shows which letter is next.
Is there a new chain every day?
Yes. Everyone playing in the same language gets the same start word each day, and Word Chain Unlimited deals a new one every round.
