How to Play Box Words
Box Words is a daily word puzzle played on a square with three letters on each of its four sides — twelve letters in all. You spell words using only those letters, with one constraint that shapes everything: two consecutive letters may never come from the same side, so every word hops around the box. Each word after the first has to start with the last letter of the word before it, which turns the round into a single chain rather than a list. Letters can be reused as often as you like. You win the moment all twelve letters have appeared in at least one of your words, however many words that took — and your score rewards doing it in fewer. Every box has a two-word solution waiting to be found, and the board usually accepts several hundred to several thousand valid words besides. Box Words is built per language from that language's own dictionary, so it is a different puzzle in each of the thirteen languages it ships in.
How Box Words works
Twelve letters, three on each side of a square. Use all twelve.
Spell a word using the letters on the box, then keep going: every word after the first starts with the last letter of the one before it. The round ends when every one of the twelve letters has appeared in at least one word.
The rules
- Every word is at least four letters long.
- Two letters in a row may never come from the same side of the box.
- Each word starts with the last letter of the previous word.
- Letters can be reused as often as you like, within a word and across words.
- You win when all twelve letters have been used — however many words it took.
Scoring. Five points per letter you cover, a hundred for finishing the box, and twenty-five for every word you came in under eight. Fewer words scores higher, because fewer words is the whole skill.
There is no timer, no guess limit and no penalty for a word the dictionary rejects.
Tips & Strategy
A nine-letter word covers most of the box in one move and leaves an easy remainder. Because the score rewards word COUNT and not word length, there is never a reason to play short when long is available.
The last letter of your word is the first letter of your next one, so ending on a vowel or a common starter keeps your options open. Ending on a letter that almost nothing begins with is how a three-word solve becomes a six-word one.
Letters like J, Q, X and W are easier to place inside a long word than to build a whole word around. Look for a single word that can absorb two of them at once.
Every board we serve is proved solvable in two common words before it goes out. If you are grinding out word five, it is not that the board is unfair - it is that the pair exists and you have not found it yet.
