How to Play Hangman

Hangman is the classic word game as a daily puzzle. One hidden word, shown as blanks, with its category as the clue - fruit, the kitchen, the circus. Guess one letter at a time: a right letter appears in every place it stands, a wrong one adds a stroke to the figure. Six misses and the round is over. Words and categories are written natively for each language, not translated.

How Hangman works

Each day's Hangman is one hidden word with its category as the clue. The word is shown as a row of blanks, one per letter, and you guess it one letter at a time on the keyboard.

A letter that is in the word appears in every place it stands. A letter that is not in the word costs a miss and adds one stroke to the figure. Find every letter before the sixth miss and you win; on the sixth miss the round ends and the word is shown.

Accents never cost you a guess: guessing O also reveals Ó and Ö where the language folds them together. The words and categories are written for each language rather than translated, and every word is checked against that language's dictionary.

Tips & Strategy

1
Vowels first

Most words carry two or three vowels. Guessing them early fills the blanks that make the rest of the word readable.

2
Use the category

A category like Fruit or In the kitchen cuts the possible words to a handful. Think of words of the right length before you guess.

3
Count the blanks

The length rules words out. A ten-letter word in Sea life is not a fish with a short name.

4
Look for patterns

Once a few letters are in place, common endings and letter pairs of your language often suggest the rest.

5
Save rare letters for last

Letters like Q, X or Z are rarely in the word. Guess them only when the pattern points to them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hangman?
Hangman is the classic letter-guessing word game. A word is hidden as a row of blanks; you guess letters one at a time, and every wrong letter adds a stroke to a drawing. Find the word before the drawing is complete. Our Hangman gives you the word's category as a clue and allows six misses.
How many wrong guesses do I get?
Six. Each letter that is not in the word costs one miss and adds one stroke to the figure. A letter that is in the word costs nothing, and it appears in every position where it occurs.
Is there a new word every day?
Yes. Every day brings a new word and category, the same for every player in your language, and it resets at midnight in your language's time zone. Unlimited mode deals a fresh word whenever you want another.
Do accents count as separate letters?
Not where the language treats them as the same letter: guessing E reveals E, É and È in French, and guessing O reveals Ó in Spanish. Letters a language counts separately, like Ñ in Spanish or Ö in Turkish, have their own keys.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
It is free and needs no download. You can play straight away; signing in only keeps your streak and statistics across devices.
Which languages can I play in?
Hangman is available in twenty languages, including Spanish (ahorcado), French (jeu du pendu), German (Galgenmännchen), Polish (wisielec), Dutch (galgje), Turkish (adam asmaca) and Portuguese (jogo da forca). Each language has its own words and categories.
Is this Hangman suitable for school?
Yes. The drawing is a simple line figure with no gallows or rope, the words are everyday vocabulary checked against each language's dictionary, and sensitive words are filtered out.
