How to Play Yes or No

Yes or No is a daily twenty questions game played against a fair judge. There is one secret thing a day, the same for everyone: an animal, a food, an object, a place. Ask anything that has a yes-or-no answer, in your own words, and the judge rules on it from a fact sheet about the secret, so the answer is the same for every player who asks. Name the thing within twenty questions to win.

How Yes or No works

Every day there is one secret thing, the same for every player: an animal, a food, an everyday object, a place. You find it the way twenty questions has always been played, by asking questions that can be answered yes or no.

Your questions are ruled by a judge that reads a short fact sheet about the secret. It answers yes, no, kind of when the honest answer is partly both, or bad question when there is no yes-or-no answer. A bad question costs nothing.

When you think you know it, type its name and press Guess. A guess uses one of your twenty questions; a close guess is called warm. Name it within twenty and you win.

Tips & Strategy

1
Halve the world

The best first questions cut the possibilities roughly in half. "Is it alive?" beats "Is it a dog?" every time.

2
Use kind of

Kind of usually means the answer depends: a tomato is kind of a vegetable. It points at exactly the property worth asking about next.

3
Ask about the thing, not the word

Questions about letters, spelling or rhymes are bad questions. Ask what it is, what it does and where you find it.

4
One idea per question

"Is it red or blue?" cannot be answered yes or no. Ask "Is it red?" instead.

5
Save the guesses

Every guess costs a question. Guess when two or three candidates are left, not twenty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Yes or No?
Yes or No is a free daily twenty questions game. There is one secret thing a day, the same for every player, and you find it by asking questions that can be answered yes or no. A judge answers each one from a short fact sheet about the secret.
How do I play Yes or No?
Type a question that can be answered yes or no, such as "Is it alive?" or "Is it bigger than a car?", and the judge answers yes, no, kind of, or bad question. When you think you know the thing, type its name and press Guess. You have twenty questions.
Is this the same as 20 Questions or Akinator?
It is classic 20 Questions with you as the one asking. The game keeps the secret and you ask, in your own words — the reverse of mind-reading genies such as Akinator, which guess what you are thinking. If you want the game to do the guessing, play Read My Mind.
Who answers my questions?
A judging model answers them. It reads your question together with a short fact sheet about the secret and picks yes, no, kind of or bad question; it never writes text, it only rules. Every player who asks the same question about the same secret gets the same answer.
What counts as a bad question?
A bad question is one that cannot be answered yes or no. "What colour is it?", "Is it red or blue?", questions about the name itself (its letters, spelling or rhymes) and anything that is not about the secret are bad questions. A bad question does not use up one of your twenty.
Does a wrong guess cost a question?
Yes, a guess uses one of your twenty questions. If your guess is close — the same family of thing — the judge tells you it is warm.
Is there a new secret every day?
Yes, there is one new secret thing every day, the same for every player, and your daily result builds your streak. Yes or No Unlimited deals a fresh secret whenever you want another round.
Is Yes or No free?
Yes, Yes or No is free to play in your browser, with no download and no sign-up. An account is optional and only keeps your streak and stats in sync across devices.
