How to Play Semantic Explorer

Semantic Wordle is a daily word-guessing game built on meaning, not letters. If you like Contexto or Semantle, you'll recognize the feel — guess any word and see its semantic rank. But Semantic Wordle adds compass hints ('think more ancient', 'think more alive') that point you toward the answer, a visual meaning map, and a cryptic oracle hint you can unlock after guess 5. You have 30 guesses to find rank #1. Any of 275,000 English words is accepted. New puzzle every day. Free, no account required.

How Semantic Wordle works

Every word in the 50,000-word dictionary is converted into a vector — a list of 1,536 numbers that captures what the word means, based on how it's used across billions of sentences. Words that appear in similar contexts end up with similar vectors. Ocean sits close to sea; candle sits close to wick and flame.

When you guess a word, Semantic Wordle computes the distance between your guess's vector and the target's. It then ranks your guess against every other word in the dictionary — rank #1 means you nailed it; rank #50,000 means you're as far as you can be.

The compass hints come from comparing your guess to the target along twelve pre-defined axes — temperature, age, weight, emotion, danger, aliveness, and others. The two axes with the largest gap become your hints. This is the key addition over Contexto and Semantle, which only give you a number.

Tips & Strategy

1
Start with a vowel-rich word

Words like CRANE, STARE, or ADIEU test common letters quickly. Knowing which vowels are present narrows options fast.

2
Use what you know

Green letters stay locked. Yellow letters must move. Gray letters are eliminated. Each guess should use all three clues.

3
Think about common patterns

English words often end in -TION, -IGHT, -OUND, -MENT. Other languages have their own patterns — learn them.

4
Eliminate, don't guess randomly

Your second word should test new letters, not repeat confirmed ones. Cover as many untested consonants as possible.

5
Watch for double letters

Words like CREEK, FLOSS, or APPLE are common traps. If your clues don't add up, consider a repeated letter.

6
Use hard mode to improve

Hard mode forces you to use confirmed clues in every guess. It builds better habits even when you switch back to normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Semantic Wordle?
Semantic Wordle is a daily word-guessing game where you find a hidden word by meaning, not letters. Type any English word and the game tells you its rank — how many of the 50,000 words in the dictionary are closer in meaning to the target than your guess. Rank #1 means you've found it. You get 30 guesses and two compass hints after every guess.
How is it different from Contexto?
Contexto shows you only a rank number; Semantic Wordle adds compass hints like 'think more ancient' or 'think more alive' that point you toward the answer along meaningful axes. You also get a visual meaning map showing your guesses as dots around a hidden center, plus an oracle hint unlocked after guess 5. Contexto gives unlimited guesses; Semantic Wordle caps at 30 for real tension. Free, no ads during play.
How is it different from Semantle?
Semantle shows a similarity score from 0 to 100; there's no hint about which direction to think. Semantic Wordle uses rank-based feedback (rank #1 is the target) plus compass hints that point you toward the answer along meaningful axes. Semantle ships one daily English word; Semantic Wordle is currently English with multilingual rollout planned. Both are free.
What are compass hints?
After each guess, two compass hints appear — 'think more burning', 'think more ancient', 'think more alive', etc. They compare your guess to the target along physical and conceptual axes (temperature, age, weight, emotion, danger, aliveness) and point you in the right direction. It's the key feature that makes Semantic Wordle easier to navigate than Contexto or Semantle.
How is the rank calculated?
Each word is converted into a high-dimensional vector using a language model trained on billions of sentences. Two words are 'close' in meaning if they appear in similar contexts. Your guess's rank is how many of the 50,000 vocabulary words have a higher semantic similarity to the target than your guess. Rank #1 means your guess is the target itself; rank #50,000 means you're as far away as possible.
What does the oracle hint do?
After your 5th guess you can ask the oracle for one cryptic, poetic hint per game. It's a nudge, not an answer — the oracle won't tell you the word directly. Use it when you feel stuck and the compass isn't helping.
Is there a new word every day?
Yes. A new hidden word is chosen each day, shared by all players in the same language, so you can compare results with friends. You can also play past puzzles in unlimited mode.
Is Semantic Wordle free?
Yes. Completely free, no account required, no ads during gameplay. Part of Wordle Global, which offers Wordle in 80+ languages plus other game modes like speed, quordle, and sedecordle.
