How to Play Scale

Scale is a daily spectrum guessing game. Each of the five rounds shows two ends — slow and fast, useless and useful — and a target between them. Name something that sits right at the target; a judging model reads where most people would put it and the needle swings to that spot. Each round scores up to 100 by how close it lands, and after a daily round you see where everyone else's answers landed on the same gauge.

How Scale works

Every day there are five rounds, the same for every player. Each round is a spectrum between two ends — slow and fast, bland and flavourful — with 0 at one end, 10 at the other, and a target somewhere from 1 to 9.

Name something that sits at the target. A judging model reads where most people would put your answer, and the needle swings to that spot. Anything real counts; only gibberish is turned back.

Each round scores up to 100 by how close the needle lands: 100 on the target, 20 fewer for every step away. After each daily round you see where everyone else's answers landed.

Tips & Strategy

1
Aim for the obvious

The needle follows what most people think, not the cleverest reading.

2
Middle targets are harder

Ends are easy; a 5 wants something genuinely in between.

3
Be specific

A specific thing lands more precisely than a broad category.

4
Name a real thing

Numbers and positions are turned back. Name an object, an animal, a food or a person.

5
Check the crowd

After a daily round, the dots show where others landed — a quick read of how people see that spectrum.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Scale?
Scale is a free daily spectrum guessing game. Each round shows two opposite ends — slow and fast, useless and useful — and a target between them, and you name something that sits right at the target.
How do I play Scale?
Read the two ends and the target number, then type something you think sits exactly there. The judge places it, the needle swings to that spot, and you score by how close it lands. Five rounds a day.
Is this like Wavelength?
Yes, it plays like Wavelength turned around for one player: the target is shown and you give the clue, and a judging model places it on the gauge. The name, the gauge and the art are our own.
How does the judge decide where my answer goes?
It reads where most people would put your answer between the two ends and weighs every point from 0 to 10; the needle lands on that reading. The same answer always lands in the same place.
How is Scale scored?
Each round scores up to 100: 100 on the target, 20 fewer for every step away, and nothing from five steps out. Five rounds make a best possible day of 500.
What answers count?
Anything real that can be placed on the spectrum counts: a thing, an animal, a food, a person, a place. Gibberish, a bare number or a position is turned back, and that round is not spent.
What are the dots on the gauge?
The dots show where everyone else's answers landed in the same daily round — only positions, never what they wrote.
Is Scale free?
Yes, Scale is free in your browser, with five new rounds a day and no sign-up. Scale Unlimited deals new spectra whenever you want more.
