How to Play Waffle

Waffle is a daily 5×5 letter-swap crossword in English. Six interlocking 5-letter words — three across, three down — start scrambled across 21 tiles. Your job is to rearrange them, not guess: tap two non-green tiles to swap their positions. Greens are locked where they belong. Yellows are in the right word but the wrong slot. Greys don't belong to either intersecting word. You have 15 swaps; par is 10 — solve in 10 or fewer for all five stars, lose a star per swap over par. Unlike wafflegame.net (English-only, one puzzle a day), Wordle Global runs Waffle in 73 languages with a built-in unlimited variant and per-language archive. Free, no account required.

How Waffle works

Every day a 5×5 waffle is built from six interlocking 5-letter words — three across (top, middle, bottom) and three down (left, centre, right), sharing letters at the nine intersection tiles. The 21 letters are scrambled into a puzzle that's solvable in about 10 swaps of perfect play; you get 15 swaps before the run ends.

Each tile colours itself against the solved grid: green means the letter is correct for the row & column it sits in, yellow means the letter belongs to the word but in a different spot, and grey means it doesn't belong to either of its two intersecting words. Green tiles lock — tap them and nothing happens. Tap any two non-green tiles and they swap.

The large number under the grid is swaps remaining, the same readout wafflegame.net made famous. Solve in 10 or fewer to earn all five stars; each extra swap peels one star off (0 stars at 15 swaps is still a win). The star rating travels with your share text so friends know the effort, not just the result.

Per-language, not English-only. The daily waffle for Spanish, German, Turkish, Finnish, and every other supported corpus is built from that language's native 5-letter daily pool — no translated word lists, no awkward anglicisms. Unlimited mode gives you an endless stream of fresh grids from the same pool; the daily streak tracker ignores unlimited results so you can practice without risk.

Tips & Strategy

1
Start with a vowel-rich word

Words like CRANE, STARE, or ADIEU test common letters quickly. Knowing which vowels are present narrows options fast.

2
Use what you know

Green letters stay locked. Yellow letters must move. Gray letters are eliminated. Each guess should use all three clues.

3
Think about common patterns

English words often end in -TION, -IGHT, -OUND, -MENT. Other languages have their own patterns — learn them.

4
Eliminate, don't guess randomly

Your second word should test new letters, not repeat confirmed ones. Cover as many untested consonants as possible.

5
Watch for double letters

Words like CREEK, FLOSS, or APPLE are common traps. If your clues don't add up, consider a repeated letter.

6
Use hard mode to improve

Hard mode forces you to use confirmed clues in every guess. It builds better habits even when you switch back to normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Waffle in English?
Waffle is a daily 5×5 letter-swap crossword in English. Six 5-letter words interlock — three across, three down — sharing letters at nine intersection tiles. The 21 letters start scrambled. You swap two tiles at a time to restore the solved grid; you have 15 swaps, and perfect play finishes in 10.
How is it different from wafflegame.net?
Same mechanic — 5×5 grid, 15 swaps, star rating — but Wordle Global runs Waffle in 73 languages rather than English only, includes a built-in unlimited variant, and keeps a per-language archive of past daily grids. No paid Deluxe tier, no ads during play. If you know wafflegame.net, you already know how to play.
What do the colours mean?
Each tile is coloured against the solved target. Green means the letter is correct for the row AND column it's in — it's locked and you can't move it. Yellow means the letter belongs to this row or column but sits in the wrong slot. Grey means the letter doesn't belong to either of its two intersecting words.
Why can't I select a green tile?
Green tiles are already in their final position. Moving one would undo real progress, so Waffle locks them — tapping does nothing. The UI only lets you swap tiles that still need to move.
How does the star rating work?
You earn 5 stars for solving in 10 or fewer swaps (the par), and you lose one star per swap over par. 11 swaps = 4 stars, 12 = 3, and so on, down to 0 stars at 15. A 0-star finish still counts as a win; running out of swaps without solving is a loss.
Are the words the same in every language?
No. Each language has its own daily waffle, built from that language's native 5-letter daily word list. The 73 supported languages share the same 15-swap rules and star system, but the words themselves are different.
Is there an unlimited mode?
Yes. Visit wordle.global/en/waffle?play=unlimited for endless fresh grids drawn from the same per-language pool. Unlimited results have their own statistics and don't affect your daily streak.
Is Waffle free?
Yes. Completely free in every supported language, no account, no download, no ads during gameplay. New daily grid at midnight in your timezone, same 15-swap budget for every player.
