How to Play Quartets Unlimited

Quartets Unlimited serves a fresh board whenever you want one instead of once a day. Same rules: sixteen words, four hidden groups of four, four mistakes, and a shuffle that never costs you anything. Boards are drawn from the same reviewed pool as the daily and never repeat today's puzzle. Free, no account.

How Quartets works

Sixteen words. Four hidden groups of four.

Pick four words you think share a hidden category and submit them. Get it right and the group lifts out of the board with its category named. Get it wrong and it costs a mistake. Four mistakes end the round.

What a submit can tell you

  • Group foundAll four words share a category. It lifts out of the board and its name is revealed.
  • One awayExactly three of your four belong together. Swap one word and submit again.
  • Not a groupNo three of your four share a category. That costs one of your four mistakes.

The four categories are not equally hard. One is a plain list, one is wordplay, and two sit in between. The ranking is hidden while you play and revealed as you solve - and it is what colours the squares in the grid you share.

A two-and-two split reports nothing. “One away” is only shown for a three-and-one selection. Reporting the even split would let the board be taken apart by elimination instead of read, which is a different and much duller game.

Shuffling the board and clearing your selection are always free. Categories are written in your own language, not translated from English.

Tips & Strategy

1
The obvious group is rarely all yours

A category that seems to have an extra member almost always does. Four of those words are a group and one is on loan to a harder category, so the safest opening submit is the group you can name four words for and only four.

2
Look for the second meaning

The hardest category of the four is usually wordplay rather than subject matter: words that all contain a hidden shorter word, all precede the same word, or all have a meaning nobody thinks of first. If three categories are topics, the fourth probably is not.

3
Solve the easy ones to expose the hard one

You never have to identify the wordplay category directly. Clear the three you can read and the fourth is whatever is left, which is why spending mistakes on a category you cannot name is usually wasted.

4
Parts of speech leak

Categories tend to be internally consistent in form: four verbs, four plurals, four proper nouns. A word that does not match the shape of the other three in your selection is often the one to swap.

5
A wrong submit still teaches you something

You have four mistakes, and each one rules out a grouping for good. Testing a reading you are seventy percent sure of early, while there is still board to work with, is usually better than saving the mistake for a position where nothing is left to learn.
